Understand our skin

Understand Our Skin

Our skin acts, as a protective barrier with our sometimes-hostile environment including function likes maintaining proper temperature for the body. Our skin is a network on sensory that plays an important part of our daily life and our skin also play the immune system and protect us from disease. Our skin is covering from head to toe in every parts of our body. The whole specialty of dermatology is devoted to understanding the skin.

Skin Anatomy

Skin structure of the 3 layers - the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue.

Epidermis

The epidermis is the outer layer of skin and the epidermis contains 5 layers. The pigment, the frontline immune system defenses are in the epidermis.

Dermis

The dermis is composed of three types of tissue; collagen, elastic tissue, and reticular fibers. The hair follicles, the erector pili muscle that attaches to each follicle and invluding the (oil) glands, the eccrine (sweat) glands, and blood vessels and nerves course are in this layer.

Subcutaneous Tissue

The subcutaneous tissue is a layer of fat and connective tissue that houses larger blood vessels and nerves. This layer is the regulator for skin and body temperature.

Understand Our Hair

Hair plays an important in men and women appearance and with styling it's part of our personality and style. Hair is part of our body, which formed when we were in mother's womb when we were in week 22 and as we get older, the density of our hair follicles on the skin decreases.

Hair Anatomy

Hair has two separate structures - the follicle in the skin and the shaft

Follicle - The follicle is a stocking-like structure that contains several layers. The follicle is surrounded by two sheaths; an inner and outer sheath. These sheaths protect and mold the growing hair shaft. The outer sheath continues all the way up to the gland. The sebaceous gland is producing sebum, which is a natural conditioner. The sebum production decreases in all of us, as we get older.

Shaft - The hair shaft is made up of dead, hard protein called keratin in three layers. The inner layer is called the medulla and the next layer is the cortex and the outer layer is the cuticle. There are pigment cells that are distributed throughout the cortex and medulla giving the hair it's characteristic color

Hair Growth & Structure

Animal may shred hairs on seasonal or based on some cycle, but human hair growth is about 3-.4 mm/day or about 6 inches per year. Straighter hair is shinier because sebum from the sebaceous gland can travel down the hair more easily, so we do have hair structure to differentiate our hair characteristic as well

Aging and Damage Skin

Above reading explain the relationship of skin and hair, so we are now learning about the aging of our skin. As we grow older, our skin becomes thinner, glands produce less oil and sebum and skin becomes drier and we are losing our youthful color and grow. We may experiences bruise easily and healing slower.

Sun light, cigarette smoking, environmental, and other factors are causing our skin damage and aging and skin problems ranging from; Age spots, Solar elastosis, Seborrheic keratoses, Skin tags, Wrinkles, Crowfeet and fine lines, and etc.

Over many years our skin can damages and lose collagen and the elastin fibers that support your skin and then lead to loose skin, sagging skin, tough and rougher skin that can make you and your skin look much older than normal. The modern treatment and therapy now make it possible for you to revitalize your skin to a healthier and youthful radiance skin.
